The Sand Extractor harvests the raw material Sand from an island, and uses a river slot. Sand extractors are cheap to build and maintain relative to their production per minute, but the need for a river may force players to expand to another island. Sand is used in the production of Microchips, Glass, and Concrete. One extractor harvests a large amount of Sand per minute as it is able to provide up to 3 production plants with enough raw materials to run at 100% productivity. They are made available at Tier 2 (Employees) and they are present in nearly every game.

Because of their high production per minute, Tycoon players are often left with extra Sand which can be sold to NPCs for some extra income (albeit at a low price) or gain a significant research advantage by over-producing Microchips.

Eco players may find their supplies of Sand strained, since they require it for building materials, to support their lifestyle, and for Tech research. Additionally, Sand Extractors use the same nodes as Grain Mills and River Sewage Treatment Plants. Because of this, available Sand resources may exert an awkward limiting force on Eco population growth without careful planning.
